Trattoria tra di noi bronx ny11/18/2023 Besides the hostess there was one waiter and one busboy. It's a small place, maybe 10 - 12 tables. We also ordered two bottles of wine, from a fairly reasonable wine list. Nice sized portions just right for sharing. The carbonara, calarmari, veal and meatballs were especially good. Everything was delicious in an old school, red sauce way. For dessert, we had the creme caramel and tartuffo (from Vindy's) and two expressos. On her advice, we ordered the calamari, arugula salad, house salad, veal sorrentino, fettucine carbonara, risotto porcini, and ribbon pasta with meatballs (which he only makes on Sundays) with extra meatballs so everyone could have one. Her husband is the chef, from Italy who trained cooking for wealthy families. The owner hostess (Laurie?) was warm and friendly and spent a lot of time with us talking about what to order and other things. Came here after visiting the Orchid Show at the Bronx Botanical Garden. We were a party of 4 for dinner at 6pm on a Sunday night (Roberto's is closed on Sundays and doesn't take reservations). Tra Di Noi means "amongst us" but I had to share it with you all. It ranks with a Don Peppe in Queens, a Roberto in the same area where each place has great but evidenceof different cusines from various regions of Italy. Marco was born and schooled in Italy and his little gem on 186th Street and Hughes Ave. residents have discovered along with the NYC firemen who stop there to stock their firehouse kitchens. A place me and the rest of the world, ie Conn. It was great and I gather the restaurant gets its meat from the exceptionally great butcher shop called Biancardis right around the corner on Arthur Avenue. Something I never do in an Italian restaurant. So for me I had the seafood salad and, I can't believe I did this, I ordered a steak. Sadly I guess me and my buddies ate the last of the fava and macaroni. Finding myself craving this dish I talked the girlfriend into a trip to the Bronx for macaroni as good as it is in Italy and back at the table in this small restaurant I was again. We followed that with chicken scarpariello with sausage. So we had one each and it was lick the plate good. While I touted the macaroni dish I found that my buddy knew it having had it once before when it had appeared on the chalk board. While others raved about the lasagna or great halibut or red snapper or the prince edward island muscles that macaroni dish was the reason I doubled back with a friend two days later. On day one Marco had macaroni with fresh fava beans and panchetta that was over the top. To me that indicates that the oil is changed very often. I noticed the color of the calamarie and on each of the three occasions it was light. Marco the chef/owner has a great salad and most of the group started off there or with fried calamarie or a seafood salad. We were thirteen and everyones' meal was super. We were a group of volunteer harness drivers from Yonkers Raceway who gave of our time to lend a helping hand at the Westchester County Food bank. That warmed my heart, and made me vow to come back soon to both Tra di Noi and the Belmont/Little Italy neighborhood.Last week we ate there three times. What I really liked was that a few people who came in and some of the tables that were already there were greeted warmly by name showing to me that this establishment is part of a close neighborhood where the owners, workers and patrons live amongst each other. Regardless, service was good with water filling and follow up. We had come at the tail end of a busy Sunday lunch so it was a bit crowed. I also had a cappuccino and that very good as well. The potatoes seemed to have been roasted but left tender and the string beans lightly streamed. The Scarpariello was excellent!! The chicken medallions were lightly dredged in flour and perfectly sautéed in the wine sauce that had chopped red peppers with whole cloves of garlic and rosemary. The carbonara ( with fresh fettuccine al dente) had a nice light sauce, not the overly creamy sauce that most other places serve. So I ordered the Fettuccine Carbonara and hubby ordered the Pollo alla Scarpariello ( chicken w/Rosemary,white wine & garlic) which came with potatoes and French cut string beans. Hubby and I have a habit of sharing so we can try more new dishes. "Hmmm" I said, " Seems to be a lot of Italian restaurants" Well, not only did we stumble upon Bronx Little Italy (NY's better one) but on Trattoria Tra di Noi and a nice day just got better. After a quick Yelp I noticed a bunch of restaurants in the area. We were headed up to the Botanical Gardens but we were starving. It was our lucky day that after visiting the zoo we happen to exit on the Southern Blvd/Belmont neighborhood side.
